17th April 2018 Tynecastle v Kelty Hearts 0-2

Was not going to go to a game today but found out Tynecastle were playing Kelty tonight. Game is being played at the Oriam rather than Tynecastle's normal home pitch at Saughton enclosure. Saughton has been unplayable for some time due to the weather and it is not helped that both Tynecastle and Lothian Thistle Hutchison Vale (LTHV) use it for home games. The pitch is also used on Sundays for amateur games so is probably overused. Should be a good game tonight as Kelty and LTHV are fighting it out at the top of the East of Scotland League. Both are unbeaten this season in league matches although LTHV dropped their first point of the season on Saturday by drawing 5-5 with Leith Athletic. That would have been some game to attend! Kelty and LTHV have yet to meet in the league due to postponements so I think whoever gets the better of the two fixtures will win the league and gain promotion to the Lowland League. LTHV have however beaten Kelty twice in cup-ties so far the season.

Cold and wet but decided to go out to Riccarton for the Hearts U20s fixture against the side some call the super Saints. Caught a 34 bus at around 17.15 and arrived a ground just as teams were leaving dressing rooms for 18.00 kickoff. No team sheets on issue although admissions free although I recognised a number of players in Hearts team. Saints took the lead on 20 minutes courtesy of a Kyle McClean strike. Then two minutes before half time Jamie Docherty doubled Saints lead with a neat finish. Both goals were similar with Hearts leaving players unmarked on Saints right hand side inside the penalty box. With Hearts 2-0 down at halftime I decided enough was enough although Euan Henderson had come close to a goal. I was cold wet and miserable so left the ground and caught a bus home which as under noted from St Johnstone website proved to be a mistake ! Hearts then made a change on fifty-nine minutes as Alex Petkov came on to replace Dean Ritchie and the big midfielder had an

At last another match at Tynecastle. After spending the morning watching Peter Rabbit with Harper headed to Tynecastle after watching a disappointing Merseyside derby on Sky. Arrived about twenty minutes before the kick-off and headed to my seat in the main stand. Hearts should be thinking about naming this new stand and I would name it after either Dave Mackay or Tommy Walker, two Hearts legends who, unfortunately, I never saw playing for the side. Hearts made a couple of changes from last weeks draw at Dundee, bringing in Michael Smith and David Milinkovic for Jaoquim Adao and Ross Callachan. I was a bit surprised about Callachan dropping to the bench after his goal last week, but in the absence of the injured Adao, Michael Smith was a good replacement as a defensive midfield player. Aberdeen had an early chance when Scott McKenna hit the bar from a Niall McGinn freekick. McGinn had been a Hearts target in the summer but I don’t think he is as good a player as Milinkovic

A late decision about where to go today. Choice was either Penicuik or Peffermill for Leith Athletic v Civil Service Strollers. As Penicuik were kicking off at 2.30 I decided to go there rather than the 3.00 kick-off at Peffermill. Caught a 47 bus in Lothian Road and got off early in Penicuik, where it was snowing. I then walked to the ground arriving at 2.15. £6 to get in and £1.50 for  programme and also had a chat with the gateman as I entered the ground. Turned out he had worked at Tynecastle previously as a volunteer groundsman. It was going to be an interesting match today. Penicuik had been leading the Super League for most of the season but after a defeat at Jeanfield Swifts last week were now a point behind Bonnyrigg at the top of the table. Bonnyrigg have games in hand over Penicuik and if they win all there games could reach 77 points. Penicuik however can only reach 67 points and really need to win all their games and hope that Bonnyrigg drop points going forward. O
