31st March 2018 Penicuik Athletic v Camelon 1-1

A late decision about where to go today. Choice was either Penicuik or Peffermill for Leith Athletic v Civil Service Strollers. As Penicuik were kicking off at 2.30 I decided to go there rather than the 3.00 kick-off at Peffermill. Caught a 47 bus in Lothian Road and got off early in Penicuik, where it was snowing. I then walked to the ground arriving at 2.15. £6 to get in and £1.50 for  programme and also had a chat with the gateman as I entered the ground. Turned out he had worked at Tynecastle previously as a volunteer groundsman.

It was going to be an interesting match today. Penicuik had been leading the Super League for most of the season but after a defeat at Jeanfield Swifts last week were now a point behind Bonnyrigg at the top of the table. Bonnyrigg have games in hand over Penicuik and if they win all there games could reach 77 points. Penicuik however can only reach 67 points and really need to win all their games and hope that Bonnyrigg drop points going forward.

On a freezing, wet miserable day Penicuik started well and early on Somerville saw a shot blocked and the rebound saved by the Camelon keeper.  Camelon took the lead when a freekick from the left was headed home by unmarked centre-half Skinner. After Penicuik got over the initial shock Camelon keeper Shaw did well after about 30 minutes to block a shot with his foot and then saved a follow-up Somerville shot. He then did even better to save another Somerville effort after a cross by Baptie.

In the opening minute of the second half, a through ball by Jones picked out Somerville. He got round the keeper but Shaw recovered to grab the ball. Later Ponton crossed from the left but Somerville's effort hit the top of the bar. However after about 70 minutes Penicuik equalised when Somerville headed in a Ponton free kick. It was similar to Camelon goal but cross was from the right hand side of the field. Both sides pressed for a winner but the game ended 1-1. On my way out of the ground I met an old work colleague John who is on the committee at Penicuik. He, like me, seems to be enjoying retirement.

After leaving the ground I caught a 37 bus back into town and walked home along South Clerk Street and Melville Drive in freezing weather.
