10th April 2018 Hearts reserves v St Johnstone reserves 3-2
Cold and wet but decided to go out to Riccarton for the Hearts U20s fixture against the side some call the super Saints. Caught a 34 bus at around 17.15 and arrived a ground just as teams were leaving dressing rooms for 18.00 kickoff. No team sheets on issue although admissions free although I recognised a number of players in Hearts team.
Saints took the lead on 20 minutes courtesy of a Kyle McClean strike. Then two minutes before half time Jamie Docherty doubled Saints lead with a neat finish. Both goals were similar with Hearts leaving players unmarked on Saints right hand side inside the penalty box. With Hearts 2-0 down at halftime I decided enough was enough although Euan Henderson had come close to a goal. I was cold wet and miserable so left the ground and caught a bus home which as under noted from St Johnstone website proved to be a mistake !
Hearts then made a change on fifty-nine minutes as Alex Petkov came on to replace Dean Ritchie and the big midfielder had an immediate impact. As a minute later a Zanatta free kick from the left was floated into the box and Petrov rose to power a header high past Clark and into the net. Hearts were now coming more into the match as Saints struggled to get back into their rhythm and it was not long until the match was level. On seventy-one minutes a Lewis Moore pass picked out Petrov and his strike took a wicked deflection off Brian to deceive Clark as the ball landed in the net. Hearts pressure eventually told as they took the lead on eighty-three minutes. A through ball by Daniel Baur caused confusion between Jack Wilson and Ben Quigley and Moore was able to nip in and get the ball. The midfielder then advanced into the box, rounding Clark, before slotting the ball into the net.
That will teach me not to leave a game early again !
