23rd April 2024 Penicuik Athletic 1 Musselburgh Athletic 3

Well it has been a while since I have been to Penicuik but decided to go tonight for their match against Musselburgh Athletic. I left home around 18.00 to catch a 47 bus to Penicuik. The weather was warm and I thought I was going to fall asleep on the bus but just managed to stay awake. Once I arrived at Montgomery Park I paid my £5 entrance and then bought a £2 programme. I wandered round towards the dressing rooms and took a photo of the team lineups which were on the wall near the main entrance. I then had a wander round the ground and met Jim near the Musselburgh bench on the far side of the ground. We took up a position near the fence in anticipation of the game starting.

Penicuik are not having a great season and are currently eleventh in the eighteen club East of Scotland Premier League. Part of the problem is that they are currently on their third manager in the past twelve months. A number of long-serving players have now moved on and have been replaced by younger players. Manager Lewis Coult has brought in Archie Roue and Ben Wardlaw from his previous club Edinburgh United. Musselburgh currently sit second place in the league, thirteen points behind leaders Broxburn Athletic who look likely to win the league with only three matches left. Musselburgh hand three ex-Penicuik players in their squad with Craig ‘’Grinchy’’’ Stevenson, Aiden Walsh and Nicky Reid.

The game started with Musselburgh taking an early lead. Nathan Evans broke down the right and turned into the penalty area. His initial shot broke off a defender and bounced back to him. He made no mistake with his second attempt firing across goal past Kyle Leiper into the far corner of the net. Musselburgh had most of the early possession but could not convert chances. I thought Nicky Reid was playing really well against his former club but not getting any clear chances to score.

Musselburgh went two up minutes into the second half. A corner from Evans was met by Declan O’Kane who headed the ball home at the near. O’Kane had been dominating the midfield with his strong tackling and good passing and fully deserved his goal. Musselburgh scored a third around the seventy minute mark when Matthew O’Connor headed in a free kick from Johnny Court. Penicuik tried to freshen up their attack by brining on Arron Somerville and Wardlaw. Jim and I walked round to the exit and saw Wardlaw pull a goal back as he knocked him a rebound after his initial shot was parried by keeper Daniel Laing.

After the final whistle we headed back to Jim’s car. He was not heading direct,y into town but dropped me off at the Fairemilehead exit to the bypass. I walked up to the crossroads and caught an eleven bus into town arriving home around 10.15 after a good night out.
