17th April 2018 Tynecastle v Kelty Hearts 0-2

Was not going to go to a game today but found out Tynecastle were playing Kelty tonight. Game is being played at the Oriam rather than Tynecastle's normal home pitch at Saughton enclosure. Saughton has been unplayable for some time due to the weather and it is not helped that both Tynecastle and Lothian Thistle Hutchison Vale (LTHV) use it for home games. The pitch is also used on Sundays for amateur games so is probably overused.

Should be a good game tonight as Kelty and LTHV are fighting it out at the top of the East of Scotland League. Both are unbeaten this season in league matches although LTHV dropped their first point of the season on Saturday by drawing 5-5 with Leith Athletic. That would have been some game to attend! Kelty and LTHV have yet to meet in the league due to postponements so I think whoever gets the better of the two fixtures will win the league and gain promotion to the Lowland League. LTHV have however beaten Kelty twice in cup-ties so far the season.

Arrived at Oriam outdoor pitch at 19.40 for the 20.00 kickoff after catching a 34 bus out to Riccarton. £5 entry fee but no programmes or team sheets. At least there are now three small stands so grabbed a seat in a crowd of maybe just over 100, a number of whom were Fifers following Kelty. You could tel they were from Fife by the shell suits and baseball caps!

The game was really competitive with both sides really getting stuck in. Kelty opened the scoring after about 20 minutes. A corner was not cleared well by Tynecastle and was knocked back into the box to Murray Carstairs who shot home from about eight yards out. Robert Watt, the Tynecastle keeper, was playing in an all pink strip which to me should not be used in football. Lets get back to white shorts and yellow tops for keepers! It was good enough for Jim Cruickshank so should be good enough for any other keeper. Game was really hard and fast with two Tynecastle players were booked in first half. Tynecastle however kept pressing forward and Dean Crabbe, son of former Hearts forward Scott Crabbe, hit the post twice before halftime. Scott was a cab driver for the RBS intersite service when I was working and when I chatted with him he was a really nice guy.

Game continued in the same vein in second half but Kelty clinched the game after 84 minutes when after a foul in the box and a sending off for Tynecastle centre half Mitchell for a second yellow card. Steven Husband scored from the resultant penalty. Steven had played for Hearts earlier in his career before moving down south to Blackpool and looked a class above the other players on the pitch.

After the game ended caught a 25 bus back into town and walked up from Gorgie home for a bacon roll and a glass of wine.
