5th July 2022 Whitehill Welfare 1 Heriot Watt University 3
I was not intending to go to a game tonight having spent the day on a trip to Stirling. However I noticed that both Whitehill Welfare and. Musselburgh. Athletic we’re playing home games on the 30 bus route and decided to catch a 30 and see where I ended up. Whitehill were playing Heriot Watt University in a fixture switched from Whitehill Ferguson Park to the 3G pitch at Peffermilll. When the 30 arrived at Peffermill at just after 10.00 I decided to get off and watch this fixture. Even better admission was free and I took up position against the pitch barrier ready for the 19.25 kickoff.
As always with pre-season friendlies it was difficult to find details of the team line-ups.I found details of the Whitehall side on Twitter with the starting line-up containing four trialists. One of the trialists was Paul Tansey who had been released by Penicuik following his plea of guilty to assaulting his girlfriend over a period of time, including on one occasion by head butting her. Having not seen HWU very often I had no detail on their side. I found out later that HWU player coach Jamie Kennedy made playing come-back three months after a chance operation, a truly courageous performance.
The match started with HWU dooing most of the attacking although I almost missed the first goal. After about ten minutes I was responding to a text on my phone when I look up to see a low cross flat across the Whitehall goal where it was knocked in from close range at the far post. The second goal came around the thirty minute mark with a break down the right. The forward stepped inside a defender and shot across goal into the far corner of the net from about fifteen years. All I can say about the scorer was that HWU Twitter named him as "Keezo". The third goal followed shortly afterwards from the HWU centre forward who I though was the best player on the park and looked capable of performing at a higher level. He beat three players cutting in from the left and shot low into the corner of the net from the edge of the penalty area. HWU Twitter gave his name as 'Nandom". I found out later his full name was Nandom Domyil.
The second half half started with Whitehall pulling a goal back after three minutes. A corner from the left by Liam Ireland was headed home by Michael Osborne from the edge of the six yard box. After this both sides made numerous substitutions and the game fell away with no clear chances for either side with HWU being deserved winners of the clash.
After the game I crossed over to Prestonfield Avenue and walked to the bus stop where a 2 arrived just as I got to the stop. I caught that to Morrison Street and walked home from there arriving background 21.30.
