25th March 2022 Lothian Thistle Hutchison Vale 1 Preston Athletic O
It’s Friday so it must be Ainslie Park. For a change not Edinburgh City but an East of Scotland League Cup tie between LTHV and Preston Athletic. After a meal if spaghetti boligniase I walked to Tollcross to catch a bus to the ground. I had already walked over eight miles so felt I was entitled to be lazy and get a bus. I got a 27 and got off at Morrisons in Ferry Road for the short walk down the hill to the ground. I had bought my £3 entry ticket on Fanbase and showed this for entry. Programmes are normally available for sale at the turnstiles but there were none showing so I assumed that none had been printed for this game. In the ground I met Jim and he told me that programmes had been printed but had not arrived yet although they were expected soon. We stayed at the fence near the turnstiles chatting and the programmes arrived about five minutes before the kickoff. We both bought one and returned to standing at the fence to watch the game. JAH, a former Meadowbank fan who now follows Edinburgh City, arrived and joined us.
Tonight’s tie was between LTHV, 14th in the EoS Premier League, against Preston Athletic, 3rd in Conere ce two, but with five games in hand over the sides above them. LTHV had started the season poor,y before running into a ripen of good form. They then improved but have fallen back recently. Former players Sean Wringe and Scott Taylor-McKenzie have recently returned to the cub from Tranent and Berwick respectively and it is anticipated their experience will keep LTHV away from relegation. Unfortunately I have been unable to confirm the full LHTV line-up with no info either at the ground or on social media. Preston Athletic we’re the first side to be relegated to the EoS League from the Lowland League and then fell from the Premier Division to the Conferences. This season however , with a young squad, they have improved and are pushing for promotion back to the Premier League.
The game started with Preston on top. Marc Molloy muscled past an LHTV defender on the edge of the penalty area. However with team mates available in the centre of the goal he elected to shoot and Rhuraid Adams’s in the LHTV goal got down to block the shot. Preston had another. Nine minutes later when Mikey Hamilton broke through towards the centre of the field. Again Adams got down to stop his shot. For the first thirty minutes of the match Prestom were the better side with therir younger side looking more likely to score. However as the game moved towards halftime LTHV came more into the game without creating any clear chances.
LTHV were the more attacking side in the second half as Preston seemed to tire. A goal finally arrived around six-five minutes when a cross was not cleared properly by th Person defence and Louis Signorini headed home from the edge of the six yard box. Preston then pressed forward again and Kyle Somers had a great chance as he cut in from the left in injury time. However his shot sailed over the bar and LTHV are probably just deserving winners in the end.
After the game I walked up to FerryRoad but just missed a 27 bus. I walked along to Crewe Toll and caught 47 to Lothian Road and walked home from there getting back around 10.20
