1st October 2019 Edinburgh University v Bonnyrigg Rose 0-4
Another day of two games on the same day. After getting home from the Hearts reserve match in the afternoon I cooked myself liver, bacon, onions, mushroom and chips for my meal as Natalie had been out for lunch and did not fancy a large meal. I had been messaging Jim throughout the day and he said that he and Alex were meeting just after 19.00 in the University tea-bar and I said I would see them there. I decided to walk to Peffermill in an effort to burn up calories before sampling the baking delights in the tea-bar. I arrived at the ground around 19.00 just as the rain was starting. Paid my £6 entrance and asked for a programme as well. The guy on the gate did not think there were any programmes available as the normal gate staff were not on duty due to a family bereavement, however he sent his colleague to check who came back with a bag of programmes and I was given a copy. Headed for a coffee and the normal tea-bar staff were also unavailable. After purchasing a coffee and a chocolate brownie and I sat down just as Jim arrived. By now the raining was pouring down and Alex was also walking to the game. Alex walked in dripping wet minutes later but cheered up after a coffee and a slice of sponge. We wandered outside around 19.42 just as the teams were coming out to find the rain had now stopped.
With the normal staff not in attendance there was no handwritten team list in the University tea-bar and I only recognised a few of the players. I will try and find details of the starting eleven and update the blog as and when I can get something. For Bonnyrigg it was surprising that Hearts loanee Daniel Baur was not included in the squad. He had not played in the reserve game in the afternoon although he was in attendance at the Oriam and I thought this was because he was playing tonight. However it maybe that he is carrying an injury. Bonnyrigg fielded the Gray brothers Ross and Scott upfront in a four-three-three formation alongside George Hunter. Recent signing Jamie Devlin was on the bench.
We had taken up position at the perimeter fence near the goal Bonnyrigg were attacking. This proved to be an inspired choice as the game started with Bonnyrigg have most of the possession and attacking. Full-backs Dean Brett and Johnathan Brown were almost playing as auxiliary wingers as the shots rained in on the University goal. Hunter had an early chance from a Brown pass but dragged his shot wide before Brett had a shot deflected away for a corner. Bonnyrigg took the lead in twenty minutes when Neil Martynuik cross into the box from the left. The unmarked S. Gray did not even need to jump to head home from about ten yards out. Bonnyrigg continued to press forward and even centre-half Euan Moyes was seen on the overlap as his side looked for more goals. Despite creating a number of chances Bonnyrigg were unable to increase their lead due to a combination of poor finishing and good goalkeeping by Kieran McDougall between the University posts. The second goal game five minutes from half-time when Martynuik was fouled just outside the penalty box. I was not sure that the tackle was a foul but the referee booked the University centre-half for the challenge. Martynuik and Lee Currie stood over the ball and Currie stepped forward to curl a shot into the top left hand corner of the goal to give Rose a 2-0 lead at the interval.Mark Weir did not have a save to make until injury time when he comfortably held a shot from outside the penalty box.
For the second half we expected more of the same and moved to the other end of the ground looking for a view of more goals. Alex had a bet for Rose to win 8-0 although as he had only staked 10p the winnings would not change his life. However the University started well and Weir made a good save from a fierce shot from just inside his penalty box. Rose then went there enil ahead in the fiftieth minute. A low cross from Brett found S. Gary in the penalty box on the left. He took a touch and then squared the ball to left back Brown, who was fifteen yards out in the centre of the goal. The defender made no mistake with a low shot into the corner of the net. University continued to press forward and Weir made another couple of good saves. Rose however were comfortable ahead and took the opportunity to give some of their squad players a run with Devlin, Jamie Docherty and Louis Swanson replacing Hunter, Brown and Currie. The substitutes brought some increased tempo into Bonnyrigg's game and Devlin came close to adding to their lead on a couple of occasions. With about five minutes to go Rose had an escape when a shot deflected off Moyes and cannoned onto the crossbar and rebounded back into play where the ball was cleared. Rose clinched the game in injury time when a quickly taken free-kick by R. Gary found Docherty about twenty yards from goal. He hit a shot into the top corner. The final whistle went after this goal and the result consolidated Rose's position as leaders in the Lowland League.
After the game I went to catch a 30 bus home but just saw it pull away from the stop as i left the ground. I walked through Prestonfield to get a better choice of buses and caught the next 30 after a short wait arriving home around 10.25.
