01st May 2019 Bonnyrigg v Penicuik Athletic 2-1
Off to Bonnyrigg for the second of the East if Scotland League play-off matches. Malcolm is feeling better now so we caught a 31 bus at Haymarket to head out to Bonnyrigg. Arrived in Bonnyrigg at 18.20 for the 18.45 kick-off and we were surprised, as we turn the corner towards the ground, to see a queue for admission. We got in after a short wait and were disappointed that no programmes were available. This was not due to them selling out but a club decision not to issue for this fixture. I was surprised at this as with the match being part of the new play-off system I would have thought demand would have been high. We headed towards the sunny side of of the ground, albeit weather was not that warm, and met up with Jim and Keith.
Penicuik made one change from Saturday with Steven Notman replacing Aaron Somerville. The lack of a second striker to support Wayne McIntosh was puzzling and put pressure on the midfield players to get forward in support. Bonnyrigg also made changes up front. Keiran McGachie and Aaron Murrell were both on the bench with Keith Lough and Ross Gray starting up front. Interestingly Jose Herreros, Jesus Garcia Tena and Kyle McClung, who had been signed to bolster the Bonnyrigg side for the season run-in, were not included in the match day squad.
The game started in a tense manner with a contrast in styles between Penicuik's passing game and Bonnyrigg's more direct approach. The first chance came when Lewis Turner had a run down the right and fired a powerful shot across goal but past the far post. Penicuik had their first chance after twenty minutes when Calum Connolly's shot was deflected on the top of the crossbar for a corner. The kick saw a collision between Bonnyrigg defenders Jon Brown and Alan Horne who both required attention before they could continue. While the Bonnrigg physio was running onto the pitch she called to the Penicuik physio to assist her to allow both players to be treated urgently. Bonnyrigg took the lead after around thirty-five minutes when a cross by Turner was headed home by Lee Currie around ten yards from goal. This was not the type of goal normally expected from Currie, a set piece expert.
The second half started with Penicuik struggling to make an serious attacks as Bonnyrigg's greater physical approach controlled the game before Sam Jones intercepted a pass near halfway and ran towards goal. His shot however ended wide of the gaol. Brown shouted to his bench that - "Roscoe is struggling" and Bonnyrigg brought on Aaron Murrell to replace him (Gray). This second goal came just after the hour mark when a Kerr Young free-kick found Turner who passed inside to the overlapping Dean Brett. The full-back continued into the penalty box and shot low from about sixteen yards into the corner of the net. There was a suspicion of a slight deflection on the shot. Minutes later Kyle Sampson, who had replaced Aaron Ponton as Penicuik looked to pull goal back, was brought down in the Bonnyrigg penalty box. Despite vociferous appeals the referee waved play on. At the next stoppage in play Penicuik co-manager Kevin Milne strongly expressed his dissatisfaction at the decision. The referee came across to the technical area to warn him to calm down but his protests continued as the referee walked away. The referee then returned to the technical area and sent Milne to the stand. Well, maybe not the stand given there is no stand at Bonnyrigg and, more correctly, banished him from the technical area. With about ten minutes to go Brown went down clutching his leg and after treatment limped off assisted by the physio. Neil Martyniuk came on in his place. Penicuik centre-half Greg Page was pushed upfield to use his power in the air to assist in pulling back a goal. Penicuik did score in the final minute of tnormal time he game Craig Stevenson hit a corner from the left hand side to the near post and substitute Aaron Somerville headed home to bring 'Cuikie" back into the game. In injury time the ball found its way to Notman just outside the penalty box. His shot was straight at Bryan Young in the Bonnyrigg goal who held the shot comfortably before the final whistle blew.
The result leaves both Penicuik and Bonnyrigg on three points in the play-off table. Penicuik have finished their games and Bonnyrigg travel to pointless Broxburn on Saturday. Depending on the result there, any of the three sides could still qualify for promotion to the Lowland League next season, albeit Bonnyrigg are probably favourites. After queueing to get out of the crowd, the attendance was announced at 1012, Malcolm and I walked to the bus stop in the High Street and a 31 arrived in a few minutes. As the bus was going to Elm Row we got of at South Bridge and walked along to the stop at the Scott Monument to catch a 31 back home.
