3rd October 2018 Tynecastle v Tranent 0-3
Was originally intending to go and watch Penicuik v Tweedmouth. However due to a combination of factors I was running late and had not left enough time to get to Penicuik. Decided to go to Meggetland to watch Tynecastle v Tranent and walked along the canal for twenty minutes arriviing at the ground around 7.15. Only £3 to get in and nice comfortable seat in the stand. Only complaint I would have is that there are no team sheets on issue and teams are announced so quickly that it is difficult to note all the names. Tranent published team on Twitter so I was able to confirm their side but unable to confirm all the home team.
Couple of interesting names the Tranent side. Former Hearts player Ian Black is now player/ assistant manager at Tranent and he started in midfield. Black's last game for Hearts was the famous 2012 cup final before he left to join Rangers. After Rangers he played for a few lower league sides in England before returning to Scotland. He still has the touches as he spread the ball around the park while sitting in front of the back four. Ryan McCallum played with my son, Craig, at Hutchison Vale. McCallum played for Berwick Rangers and Cowdenbeath in league football before moving to Penicuik in the junior leagues where he scored a lot of goals. He was expected to retire after leaving Penicuik but signed for Tranent for this season.
The match started with Tranent looking the better side.Tranent had been in the Junior leagues last season and moved up to the East of Scotland League in an effort to climb through the SFA pyramid to the senior leagues. Tynecastle have been in the East of Scotland League for a number of years and have been a top half side. However it was obvious from the game that Tranent were the better side and they took the lead after around 15 minutes. A long through ball was gathered by outside left McGovern who shot home from the left hand side of the penalty box. Tranent continued to dominate play and only a tendency be caught offside prevented any further goal in the first half.
Minutes into the second half Tranent went two ahead. A shot from Fisher was parried by the Tynecastle keeper and Robertson knocked the ball home. Tynecastle had a couple of attempts but Harris in the Tranent goal was not unduly troubled. Tackles were getting a bit heated and the referee booked three players. With about ten minutes to go Tranent got a third when Devlin was pushed over in the box and Fisher (the best player on the park) knocked home the resultant penalty. Tynecastle then had a defender sent off for a second yellow card before the end of the game.
Not a bad game and walked up to Colinton Road to catch a 27 bus home. When I got home I checked Twitter to find that Penicuik had beaten Tweedmouth 9-0. It seems that the previous junior sides are a cut above the EoS League sides with Penicuik, Bonnyrigg, Newtongrange and Tranent all heading to top of the table spots. Will be interesting to see which side wins promotion to the Lowland League at the end of the season and also how the new EoS League will br structured next season as the current three conferences revert to two leagues.
