8th September 2018 The Spartans v Whitehill Welfare 1-0
With the SPFL on an international break decided to go and watch Spartans. As I had done 5k steps in morning took lazy way of going and caught a 27 bus at Tollcross. Arrived at ground around 14.30 in time for a sausage roll and a Diet Coke.
Not sure about this game. Whitehall used to be not a bad side but have fallen away over the past few years. With Selkirk having withdrawn from the Lowland league Whitehall are now bottom of the table with just one win this season. League officials have announced that one team will still be relegated this season with two sides being promoted bringing league back to sixteen sides next season. With sides like Bonnyrigg, Newtongrange and Penicuik now in the East Scotland league things could be worse rather than better for Whitehall if their local rivals are promoted.
Spartans started well and American striker Steven MacDonald had an early shot saved by Ross Jardine in the Whitehall goal. MacDonald then had a close range shot cleared off the line by James McPartlin of Whitehall before getting the ball into the net but the 'goal' was ruled off for offside. Jamie Dishington put Spartans ahead with a shot from twenty-five yards which nestled low in the Whitehall goal net after around twenty-five minutes. Whitehall lost Jack Wright with a wrist injury before halftime.
The second half was very like the first with Spartans passing the ball around well but Whitehall defending well and preventing any real chances. Jack Smith had a shot which came of the bar with Jardine unable to get near it. However other than a header from Jack Nixon well saved by Jardine chances were not clear cut. Whitehall lost another player to injury when Kevin Keane had to be substituted after a clash of heads with Dishington. I cannot understand why second half substitute Blair Atkinson does not get a regular start for Spartans given both his pace and goal scoring record. The game ended 1-0 to Spartans with Blair Carswell in Spartans goal having little to do. Carswell recorded his fiftieth clean sheet for Spartans in only his 128th match. Not the best match I have seen this season but Spartans now top of the league with previous leaders East Kilbride in Irn-Bru Cup action today.
After the game I caught a 27 bus in Ferry Road and was home by six o'clock.
