15th September 2018 Edinburgh United v Mid Annandale 5-1

Was not sure where to go today. Was thinking about Motherwell for Hearts game but with visitors for lunch could not catch train in time to get there. Choices included LTHV v Spartans and games also on at Penicuik and Edinburgh University. Finally decided to be different and headed out to Edinburgh United v Mid Annandale in South Region Challenge Cup. Had not been the Uniteds ground at Paties Road before although I worked for three years only half a mile away. Caught a 27 bus and walked down from Firhill to Paties Road. It’s a nice ground in an urban setting just near the Mechiston Castle School playing fields.

When teams came out on the field I felt like making a comeback as I am sure I am thinner than Edinburgh keeper Darren Walker. The Edinburgh side also included Eddie Mearns who started his career at Hearts and played a number of games in senior football before moving down the leagues.

Game started wth a bang as Edinburgh scored in first minute which was later posted in Twitter as 19 seconds. Kern Hutchison on the right hand side cut the ball back to Daniel McKinlay who scored from about ten yards out. After about twenty minutes second goal arrived when Andrew Swinney sent in a cross from the right hand side. I don't believe he meant to score but ball went in at the far post as it was missed by everyone in the centre of the box.

in the second half United scored again after about ten minutes when McKinlay crossed the ball from the right for Hutchison to score. The fourth goal arrived minutes later when Sean Conlon was fouled just outside the box. James Flynn took the free kick and it was deflected in off Hutchison. Edinburgh were well on top and Annandale did not look a good side. Gabri Aurienma scored number five from a penalty after Conlon was tripped in the box. An Annandale defender was complaining about the award but it was the clearest penalty I have seen for years. Even Willie Collum would have to have given it unless, of course, it was against Celtic at Parkhead. Annandale pulled a goal back with ten minutes to go when Robson scored with a shot from the left hand side of penalty box. I don't want to see disparaging aboutt Annandale but Edinburgh were not even in Junior Super League last season. If this is standard of South of Scotland League they are not going to have many sides moving uo the pyramid.

Not a bad game and a really nice setting at the ground. Walked up to Firhill and caught a 4 bus home. Natalie thought I had left game early as she did not know it was a 14.30 kickoff ! Settled down to watch Man Utd V Watford on BT Sport
